Power Source Technologies Wins Prestigious R&D 100 Award
The Perpetua Power Puck™
receives prestigious recognition as one of the year’s 100
most technologically significant products
July 20, 2009
CORVALLIS, OR—Perpetua
Power Source Technologies, Inc. (Perpetua), a leading provider of
renewable energy solutions for wireless sensors, announced today
that R&D Magazine has selected the Perpetua Power Puck
for its prestigious 2009 R&D 100 Award.
“We are excited to be part
of this impressive group of R&D 100 award winners,” said
Perpetua’s president, Jon Hofmeister. “A large number
of people contributed to develop this important product, including
our partners who provided valuable input throughout its development,
first helping outline what their ideal solution would comprise,
and then testing to ensure that the Perpetua Power Puck met their
requirements.”
The R&D 100 Award was founded by R&D
Magazine in 1963 to promote the 100 most technically innovative
products developed each year in applications as diverse as environmental
sciences, energy devices, semiconductor, software, and communications.
The award is highly regarded in the global scientific and technology
R&D community. Each year over a thousand applications enter
this competition and only the top 100 innovations are selected to
receive the award for their significant contribution to technology
commercialization.
Based on technology exclusively licensed from Battelle
Memorial Institute, operator of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory,
the Perpetua Power Puck is the first product line based on Perpetua’s
Flexible Thermoelectric Film™ technology. The modules collect,
store and deliver regulated energy for wireless sensors by harvesting
renewable energy from naturally occurring temperature differences
in various indoor and outdoor environments. Depending on available
temperature differences, this “renewable battery” module
is capable of delivering a constant 3-6 volts or more for the lifetime
of most wireless sensor devices. Simply affix the Power Puck to
a warm surface for years of renewable energy.
"Our goal setting out was to develop a plug
and play renewable power source that would greatly extend battery
life or replace batteries altogether in wireless sensors,”
said Hofmeister. “The battery replacement problem in wireless
sensors is one of the largest obstacles for wireless sensor systems
and the Perpetua Power Puck provides a robust solution. In addition,
we are proud that these renewable solutions will contribute to less
batteries being deposed of in landfills,” Hofmeister added.
Perpetua received the R&D 100 award in partnership
with PNNL.
